Our Alipay C2C Deposit Got a Bank Card Frozen: How to Avoid It, What to Do If It Happens

We used Alipay for a RMB C2C deposit and got our card frozen by risk control on the third transfer to the same recipient. This note records the entire freeze, the unfreezing process, and the strategy we switched to afterward.

Our C2C deposit ended up getting a card frozen once, and we've written down the whole process for anyone who runs into the same thing. Bottom line first: never use your salary card or your household's main card for C2C transfers.

How the Freeze Happened

1st transfer: placed a C2C order for 2,000 RMB with a seller who had 5,000 completed orders and a 99% positive rating, paying from a China Merchants Bank (CMB) debit card → Alipay → the merchant's Alipay. No issues.

2nd transfer: placed another order for 3,000 RMB the same day, same seller, same route. No issues.

3rd transfer: 4 hours later, placed an order for 5,000 RMB, same seller again. 30 minutes after the transfer completed, the CMB app popped up a notification:

Your account has been temporarily frozen due to suspected suspicious activity. Please visit a branch or call customer service to verify.

Alipay itself was fine — it was the CMB card that got frozen.

What Triggered the Risk Control

Looking back, the likely triggers were:

  • Frequency: 3 transfers to the same recipient within 24 hours
  • Amount: a single transfer of 5,000 RMB hit the bank's "suspicious transaction" threshold
  • Linked IP: the Alipay login device also had the Binance app open at the same time, linking it to a crypto-related IP

Risk-control rules differ from bank to bank, but cumulative frequency + single transaction amount are the two most sensitive factors.

The Unfreezing Process

What Actually Worked With CMB

  1. Called the 95555 customer service line and followed the prompts to reach a human agent (about 15 minutes on hold)
  2. Explained "my card was frozen and I want to request unfreezing" — the agent asked a few security questions (ID number, amount of the most recent transaction)
  3. The agent said "you need to verify the purpose of the transaction in person at a branch"
  4. Went to a branch and waited in line — staff checked my ID and asked "what was this recent large transfer for?"
  5. The answer: keep it short, like "paying back a friend" or "a shopping refund." Never mention "crypto," "coins," or "USDT" on your own
  6. Staff entered it into the system, and the card was unfrozen about 30 minutes later

From frozen to unfrozen, the whole process actually took 5 business days, because branches are only open 9 AM to 5 PM on weekdays.

How Difficult Unfreezing Is, By Bank

Based on our own case plus a friend's comparison test:

Bank Unfreezing difficulty Notes
China Merchants Bank Medium 5-30 minutes at a branch
ICBC High May require a "risk review," which can take up to 30 days
China Construction Bank Medium-High Frequently triggered after large transfers
SPD Bank / Ping An Bank Medium Resolved with a single in-branch verification
Internet banks (WeBank / MYbank) Low Can be resolved remotely by customer service

The Strategy We Switched To

After getting frozen once, we changed our approach:

  1. Use a dedicated card for C2C: open a separate bank card (we recommend SPD Bank or Ping An Bank), used only for C2C — no salary deposits, not linked to your main Alipay account
  2. Spread out the amounts: keep each transfer ≤ 3,000 RMB, with a daily total ≤ 8,000 RMB
  3. Don't repeat the same merchant too often: at most 2 consecutive orders with the same merchant, then switch on the 3rd
  4. Spread out the timing: leave at least 1 hour between consecutive transfers
  5. Keep the payment note standard: follow exactly what the merchant asks for, and don't add any keywords beyond "repayment" on your own

We haven't had a card frozen again in the 6 months since.

What to Do If Your Card Gets Frozen

If you're reading this after your card has already been frozen:

  1. Stop C2C immediately — continuing could escalate the freeze into a "long-term freeze"
  2. Call the bank's customer service to find out how long the freeze will last (usually 24-72 hours, up to 30 days at most)
  3. Prepare your ID, screenshots of your last 3 transactions, and a short explanation
  4. Go to a branch instead of waiting for a remote unfreeze — a branch can verify your identity and resolve it on the spot
  5. Once unfrozen, don't use that card for C2C again

Other Ways to Deposit

If dealing with RMB deposits has worn you out, take a look at:

Fiat deposits always carry some risk-control risk. For amounts above 10,000 RMB, we recommend going through on-chain USDT rather than C2C.

Don't Demonize C2C

Even though this note walks through a card freeze, C2C is still overall the cheapest and fastest way to deposit RMB — 0% fees, funds arrive within 30 minutes. The odds of getting frozen at a reasonable usage frequency are actually low (< 5%), and following the strategy above should keep you out of trouble.
